📝 About VAT Calculator

The VAT Calculator splits an amount into its net value, VAT and gross total. It works in two directions: add VAT to a price that excludes tax, or extract the VAT already included in a total. The rate defaults to 10%, Korea’s standard VAT rate, but you can enter any rate for other countries.

It is helpful when writing quotes and invoices, checking a tax invoice, setting a VAT-inclusive retail price, or figuring out how much of a receipt total is actually tax.

Adding VAT is straightforward: VAT = net × rate, and gross = net + VAT. Extracting VAT from a total is where people often go wrong. Taking 10% of the total gives too much tax; instead, divide the total by (1 + rate). With a 10% rate, the net amount is total ÷ 1.1 and the VAT is total ÷ 11. For example, 110,000 includes 100,000 net and 10,000 VAT. Displayed amounts are rounded to whole units, so official documents may differ by one unit depending on the rounding rule used.

❓ FAQ

How do I find the VAT inside a total that already includes it?

Choose “Amount includes VAT.” At a 10% rate the VAT equals the total divided by 11, not 10% of the total.

Can I use rates other than 10%?

Yes. Enter any rate in the VAT rate field, for example 20% for many European countries.

Why might my result differ by 1 from an invoice?

The calculator rounds to the nearest whole unit, while some invoices truncate fractions. The difference is only a rounding rule.
