📝 About Hash Generator
The Hash Generator computes SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512 digests of any text you type. The result appears instantly as a lowercase hexadecimal string and updates as you edit the input or switch algorithms. SHA-1 produces 40 hex characters, SHA-256 produces 64 and SHA-512 produces 128.
A hash function turns input of any length into a fixed-size fingerprint. The same input always yields the same hash, while even a one-character change produces a completely different one. Hashing is one-way, which is the key difference from encryption: encrypted data can be decrypted with a key, but a hash cannot be turned back into the original text. This makes hashes useful for verifying file or message integrity, comparing values without exposing them, and generating cache keys.
Prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512 for new work, as SHA-1 is no longer considered collision-resistant. Text is encoded as UTF-8 and hashed with the browser’s Web Crypto API, entirely on your device.
📘 How to use
- 1
Type or paste text
Enter the text you want to hash in the input box.
- 2
Pick an algorithm
Click SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512, and the hash is recalculated immediately.
- 3
Copy the hash
Use the copy button below the result to copy the hexadecimal digest.
❓ FAQ
Can a hash be reversed to get the original text?
Not directly, since hashing is one-way. However, short or common inputs can be guessed by hashing many candidates, so a hash alone does not keep weak secrets safe.
Does this tool support MD5?
No. It offers SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512, which are the algorithms provided by the browser’s Web Crypto API.
Should I use this to hash passwords for storage?
Plain SHA hashes are too fast for password storage. Use a dedicated password hashing algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 with a salt.
Why does my result differ from another tool?
Invisible differences such as a trailing newline, extra spaces or a different text encoding change the hash. This tool hashes the exact text in the box as UTF-8.
